Photoshop 2025: Generative Fill can now Generate Similar

Steve Patterson here from Photoshop Essentials.
There’s a great new feature in Photoshop 2025   called Generate Similar, which is like an
extension of Generative Fill. When we use   Generative Fill, we get three initial results. If
we don’t like any of the results, we can generate   three new ones. And we can keep generating
more until we get one that we like. But now   with Generate Similar, if one of those results was
close to what you were looking for, you can create   more results that are similar to it. Let’s see
how it works. With this image, I want to add a   camping tent on the right using Generative Fill.
First I need to select the area, so I’ll grab the   Selection Brush Tool from the toolbar.

Then I’ll
paint a continuous brush stroke around the general   area where I want the tent to appear. Photoshop
selects the entire area when I release my mouse   button. In the Contextual Task Bar, I’ll click
Generative Fill. For my prompt, I’ll just type   “camping tent”, and then I’ll click Generate.
Photoshop connects to the Adobe Firefly servers   over the internet, and after a few seconds, I
get three initial results. In the Layers panel,   we have our Generative Fill layer above the
image. And in the Properties panel, we have three   variations that we can choose from. The first
result isn’t too bad. I’ll try the second one,   and I think I like this one better.

Let’s try the
third one, and it’s also not too bad. Firefly did   a good job matching the colors and the lighting
on the tents with the rest of the image. Now if   I didn’t like any of these initial results, I
could click Generate to generate three more.   But they would be completely random results every
time. What if I like this second result? I know   it’s not perfect and it has this weird spot
here, but what if I want Photoshop to create   more results that are similar to it? Well now in
Photoshop 2025, we can do that. All we need to do   is go to its thumbnail in the Properties panel,
click on the three dots in the upper right and   choose Generate Similar. Again we need to wait
while Firefly analyzes the image.

But now we   have three new results that are very similar to
that initial result. So we have our first one,   our second one which is not that great, and our
third one. The third one has some problems but if   I want, I can now generate three similar results
to this one just by clicking those three dots in   the upper right of its thumbnail and choosing
Generate Similar. And after a few seconds,   we get three similar results. But I don’t really
like any of them so I’ll click the trash bins to   delete them. I still like this result the best
even though it does have some problems. It has   this shadow area here, and this section doesn’t
look right, and there’s an issue with the bottom   corner. But instead of generating more and more
results hoping for something that’s perfect, let’s   see if we can fix these problems using Generative
Fill. I still have my Selection Brush active,   so I’ll paint a selection outline over that shadow
area. Then I’ll paint another selection over this   area. I’ll move the Task Bar out of the way, and
I’ll resize my brush and paint over that corner.   And I’ll grab that spot right there.

So now that
all of the areas I need to fix are selected, I’ll   click Generative Fill. I don’t need to enter a
prompt this time because I’m not adding anything,   so I can just click Generate. And Photoshop was
able to fix all of those problems at once. I’ll   try the second variation, and this one is even
better. And the third one is not as good so the   second one is the winner. If I turn that top
Generative Fill layer on and off, here’s what   the original tent looked like. And here it is
after fixing those problems with Generative   Fill. And I just noticed one more problem that I
will quickly paint over with the Selection Brush,   and then I’ll click Generative Fill and then
Generate.

And I’ll try all three variations,   and the second one looks good. So this was the
original image, this is the tent that we added   using Generative Fill and Generate Similar. And
we have our two additional Generative Fill layers   that we used to fix those problems. And there we
have it. If you enjoyed this video, don’t forget   to click the Like button and subscribe to
